This clarity is essential because it directs your prioritization. Features that don’t directly test your core assumption should be deferred. Features that are essential to testing your assumption should be included even if they’re not polished. You’re not trying to impress users with a beautiful product—you’re trying to get honest feedback about whether the fundamental idea is sound.
Many startup founders struggle with this because they have a vision of what they eventually want to build. The MVP feels incomplete because it is—intentionally. Your job is to resist the temptation to add features and instead stay focused on validating the core assumption.

When founders ask “how long should an MVP take?”, the honest answer is “it depends.” But some benchmarks help.
For a simple web application built by one competent developer, an MVP might take 4 to 8 weeks. This assumes a focused scope—maybe 3 to 5 core features, a straightforward data model, and no complex integrations.
For an application with mobile and web clients, figure 8 to 12 weeks with the same team size and scope. Mobile development adds complexity.
For an application that needs to integrate with external systems (payment processing, third-party APIs, etc.), add 2 to 4 weeks for those integrations.
These are timelines with focused scope and experienced developers. If you’re learning while building, or if scope creeps, timelines expand accordingly.
Cost varies enormously based on geography and team setup. A small team of experienced developers working in a lower-cost region might cost $50,000 to $100,000 for an MVP. The same application built in an expensive U.S. city by expensive contractors might cost $150,000 to $300,000. Or you might build it yourself and pay mainly in opportunity cost and sweat equity.
The key insight is that MVP should be relatively inexpensive in the context of your total startup budget. If you have $500,000 in seed funding, spending $50,000 to $100,000 on an MVP leaves plenty of budget to iterate based on what you learn. If an MVP costs a substantial fraction of your total budget, your scope is too large.
Using MVP Data to Build Credibility with Investors
Many founders ask: “What do I show investors when I’m fundraising?” The answer increasingly is: “Real data from real users of your MVP.”
Investors care about evidence. They want to see that the problem you claim to solve is actually a problem customers care about. They want to see that your solution resonates with customers. They want to see that customers will pay for your solution (or provide value through other means).

This is more powerful than any pitch deck. It’s proof. Investors will absolutely fund a simple MVP with real traction over a beautifully designed mockup with no users.
So build your MVP specifically to get this traction. Make it easy for people to try it. Ask early users for feedback and testimonials. Track metrics that demonstrate value creation. Use this data in your investor conversations.
If your MVP doesn’t get meaningful traction, that’s valuable learning too. It tells you either that your problem wasn’t as important as you thought, or that your solution isn’t addressing it effectively. Either way, you’ve learned this before raising a large amount of capital, which is far preferable to learning it after you’ve invested months and millions of dollars building a full product.
The Launch: Getting Users to Try Your MVP
Building an MVP isn’t the final step—it’s the beginning. You need users to try it, use it, and give you feedback.
Getting initial users typically requires a combination of channels. Direct outreach to people you think might benefit from your product works well in early stages. Join online communities where your target customers hang out and introduce yourself honestly. “I built something that I think solves X problem—would you be willing to try it and give me feedback?” If you genuinely think you’ve solved a problem people have, most people will be willing to give it a try if you ask politely.
Social media, especially communities like Product Hunt or Twitter, can drive attention if you have something interesting to share. Growth hacking tactics—viral mechanics, referral incentives, content that gets shared—can help, but at the MVP stage you don’t need a large number of users. You need a small number of engaged users who care about your product and will give you honest feedback.
As you get users, invest heavily in communicating with them. Understand their workflows. Understand what they like and what frustrated them. Understand what problems they’re trying to solve that your product doesn’t address. This feedback shapes what you build next.
Iteration: From MVP to Product
Once you have an MVP and users, you move into iteration mode. You use the feedback you’ve gathered to decide what to build next. Some features you included in the MVP might be less important than you thought—deprioritize them. Features you didn’t include might be critical for actual use—prioritize them.
